The Geology Behind the Mystic Beauty of Georgian Bay

The unique beauty of the 30,000 islands can be traced back to its origans in the Canadian Shield. The granite and igneous bedrocks are the folded remains of ancient mountains, scraped and eroded by glaciers approximately 11,000 years ago.

Geologists label the iconic rock of Georgian Bay – Gneisis. The lighter layers are granite-like and have a “salt-and-pepper” texture. This granite texture tells geologists that the rock originated deep in the Earth at very high temperatures and pressures that are near the melting point of rock.

The clear and colourless quality of the water is due to the high alkalinity and dissolved minerals from the extensive areas of limestone bedrock on the western shores of Georgian Bay.

This eastern coast of Georgian Bay stretching from Port Severn to the French River has been recognized as a UNESCO biosphere reserve and it is our challenge to protect this incredible environment as we enjoy its gifts as photographers, boaters, cottagers and guests.
